General Observations October 2

October 30th, 2010
5:47 PM

Detailed Weather:

Wind -
  • There was no wind.  The air was completely still.  I turned around several times to face all possible directions, and no direction caused any amount of wind to be directly hitting me in the face.
  • Beaufort Scale: 0
Clouds -

  • There were not many clouds, but a few were floating very high in the sky.
  • The clouds were long, white, and wispy.
  • cirrus clouds.
Temperature -

  • Air: 56° Fahrenheit
  • Fahrenheit to Celsius:

C = (56 - 32) x 5/9

C = 24 x 5/9

C = 24/1 x 5/9

C = 120/9

C = 13.3333333

  • 13.333333333° Celsius
  • Water: my water is still dried up!!!

General Observations:

Measurements -

  • Bur oak tree branch - 60 inches
  • inches to centimeters conversion -
2.54n = c

2.54(60) = c

c = 152.4

  • bur oak tree branch = 152.4 cm
  • water depth: my water is still dried up!!
Biota -

  • 2 bur oak trees
  • common green foxtail
  • 7 wild turkeys!
  • miniature daisy
  • field cricket
Differences from previous months -

  • Seasonal changes:
    • NO leaves on one bur oak tree!
    • the leaves that have fallen to the ground are turning brown and crumbly
    • It is much cooler outside!
    • it is getting dark outside sooner, so I am going to have to plan earlier visits to my ecosystem
  • my bur oak tree "measuring branch" has grown drastically since last month!  I never knew trees grew this rapidly.
  • The actual tree is getting taller as well.  This is becoming a small problem for the under-5-foot person who is supposed to measure it.
  • The entire area seemed more barren and deserted.  Much of the foliage and plant life is dying, and decreasing in population.  I found one lonely miniature daisy which was very different from the large patch I usually find.

  • I have found many naturally caused holes in the ground.  This must mean the animals are going into hibernation.
  • The corn is gone, meaning growing season is over.  Maybe I will have water next month!
